Surf Cat 850      8.5M Aluminium Power Cat

SeaSpeed Design are proud to announce the successful completion of our new prototype power catamaran  ‘Surf Cat 850’, It is rewarding to go back and design a smaller power cat after so many years of designing larger commercial catamarans with so many lessons learnt over 30 years of design. This 8.5 metre aluminium catamaran model was designed as a stable platform which could operate at high speeds in coastal operations for a number of private and commercial applications. The prototype was purchased during construction by an island resort operator to use for island transfer and cruise/tour operations.  Click here for Video

The outboard powered cat has been designed to operate in coastal waters and carry out beach landings in rough surf conditions, thus dubbed the “Surf Cat” (named after a once popular fiberglass power cat which was used by the volunteer surf lifesaving organization in Australia).

The cat is based on our previous “FastCat” planning catamaran designs and has been developed to be very strong and sturdy and consequently last a lifetime. The aluminium structure is in accordance with Australian commercial vessel standards and Lloyds SSC code requirements.

The layout for this version is quite simple, with perimeter seating for say 18 persons and a raised helm forward. The raised fore deck is accessed be a centre stairwell to allow the crew to easily access and dispatch the forward anchor when backing on to the beach.

The hull is subdivided into six separate watertight compartments, which are accessed by fabricated aluminium hatches. The design is a deep Vee symmetrical hull form with hard chines and spray strakes. The wing height is high enough to avoid slamming. This design has many applications for both commercial and private uses and is very versatile, perfect for a fishing boat or as a diving boat. The design has been developed into an aluminium kit which has been router cut. The Surf Cat 850 was completed at Thailand Factory in July 2019
